David Bergmüller, born in Tyrol, Austria, began his musical career with the classical guitar. During his training at the Tiroler Landeskonservatorium with Stefan Hackl, he discovered the lute for himself. From 2009 to 2012 he studied lute at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland, with Hopkinson Smith. From 2012 to 2015 he studied for a master's degree with Rolf Lislevand at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Trossingen, Germany, graduating with distinction.
As a sought-after continuo player he has performed with Concentus Musicus, La Cetra, I Barocchisti, the Collegium 1704, the ZKO-Züricher Kammerorchester, Ars Antiqua Austria and personalities such as Maurice Steger, Sergio Azzolini, Rolf Lislevand, Alessandro de Marchi or Vaclav Lucs.
As a soloist he won the Franz Aumann Prize at the H.I.F. Biber Competition in St. Florian in 2017. Since 2018 he is professor for lute at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne, Germany.
